Company President's Letter

  • Hello,
  • Windham Container was started in 1958 by my father, Glenn Mauer. He had been the plant manger of Albany Container in Schenectady, New York. When he relocated to Putnam, Connecticut, he soon realized that there were no "box shops" within a 25 mile radius. But rather there were many small manufacturing businesses that made wire, plastic parts, shoes and other assorted goods that needed to be shipped.
  • Back then there were no major highways or interstates, so travel was much slower and larger corrugated companies didn't bother with the country accounts. So my Dad, without a 5 year plan, opened Windham Container. The name came from the county that Putnam was in, Windham County.
  • His shop was small and made deliveries to these companies when they needed boxes. As I look at this, this must have been the beginning of "Just in Time." Being a family-owned company is different. My mother, Betty, handled all the book-keeping; my brother, Skip, did the scheduling; and Dad did the selling. I was in school. After a short career as a teacher, I became the salesman and continue doing that today. Keeping in the family business means my wife, Jeanine, runs the office; and my son, Eric, is in sales and does things electronically, which I never did.
  • Windham still serves a diverse industry; however, sadly some or most of the old accounts which my father started with have been sold, moved or just gone out of business. With the new Global Economy, it's not about loyalty, but cost, except when the deliveries don't arrive on time. Made in America still means a lot to me. I would be remiss if I did not mention our employees, some whom have been here for over 20 years. They have been more quality conscious even before ISO 9000 was ever thought of.
  • So thank you for taking the time to read this, and by the way, why not give us a try?
  • Gordie Mauer
